Which pearl necklace length should you choose?

42 cm sits close around the neck, while 65 cm hangs lower on the chest. More than the pearls themselves, this difference determines how the necklace looks when worn. These are the pearl necklaces you can find here:

• Boris Pearl Necklace – 42 cm – Short pearl necklace, sits on the collarbone – €49.99
• Boris Wild Necklace – 44 cm – Just below the collarbone – €52.49
• Flint Gold Necklace – 50 cm – Sits on the décolletage – €69.99
• Oliver Pearl Necklace – 65 cm – Long pearl necklace, hangs low – €74.99

Not sure which one to choose? A short necklace of 42 or 44 cm works best when layering multiple necklaces. The delicate 42 cm Boris is the safest choice for this. From 50 cm onwards, a necklace is better worn on its own, otherwise the different lengths may cross over each other.

Where is the gold in a gold pearl necklace?

At Bonnie, the gold is in the finish rather than the entire piece of jewellery. The gold necklaces in this collection are plated with 14K gold over stainless steel, rather than being solid gold. The Flint Gold Necklace combines pearls with a 5 mm gold-plated paperclip chain, while the Oliver Pearl Necklace features a gold-plated chain section with a red knotted robe between the pearls.

If you are looking for a pearl necklace made from solid gold, this is not the necklace for you. Gold-plated steel is lighter, more affordable and suitable for everyday wear. A silver pearl necklace is not part of this collection; you can find silver-coloured jewellery under Gold & Silver.

Freshwater pearls: why is every pearl different?

All the pearls here are baroque freshwater pearls, which means they are never perfectly round. Every pearl has its own shape and lustre, sometimes with a slight ridge. The pearls on the Boris Pearl Necklace are approximately 6 mm. Every freshwater pearl necklace is strung by hand, so the order of the pearls also varies from piece to piece.

That makes your choice simple. If you want a modern pearl necklace with character, you are in the right place. If you prefer a perfectly uniform row of identical, smooth pearls, a traditional jeweller may be a better fit. We make the other kind of pearl jewellery. You also will not find a necklace with a single pearl pendant here: all of our pearl necklaces are strung.

Are these real pearls?

Yes. These are cultured freshwater pearls, not glass pearls or imitation pearls. You can recognise genuine pearls by their irregular shape, cool feel against the skin and soft, deep lustre rather than a uniform plastic-like shine. This creates a timeless look that imitation pearls simply cannot match.

What you will not find here are saltwater pearls such as Akoya or Tahitian pearls. These are rarer, rounder and considerably more expensive. These pearl necklaces are made to be worn, not kept in a safe.

When do you wear a pearl necklace?

Every day, if you want to. Pearl necklaces look just as good with a T-shirt and jeans as they do with a dress; the difference comes down to the length and the rest of your jewellery. If you are looking for an elegant pearl necklace for a wedding or party, choose 50 or 65 cm. For everyday wear, go for 42 or 44 cm.

A pearl necklace also makes an easy gift because you do not need to know someone's size. If you would rather give something smaller, take a look at our earrings. Baroque pearls offer a different kind of elegance compared with smooth pearls: less formal and more individual.

How much does a pearl necklace cost at Bonnie?

Our pearl necklaces range in price from €49.99 to €74.99. We offer free shipping within the Netherlands and Belgium on orders over €79. Your order is dispatched with DHL within 1 to 3 working days, always with track & trace, and you have 14 days to return it. With the Bonnie Member Club, you earn points with every purchase.

How do you keep your pearl necklace looking beautiful?

Take off your necklace before showering, swimming, exercising or sleeping. Avoid contact with perfume, lotion, sweat and heat, as these can damage the gold plating. Store it somewhere dry in a soft pouch to help the clasp retain its shine. This applies to all gold-plated Bonnie jewellery.

Combining pearl necklaces with your other jewellery

A pearl necklace is elegant and timeless, which is exactly why it works so well next to something that is not. Wear the subtle 42 cm Boris over a playful beaded necklace, or pair it with a statement necklace if you want something bolder. Combine different lengths for a layered look. If you prefer a minimalist necklace, a pearl necklace with a casual outfit is all you need.

A women's pearl necklace also pairs well with matching bracelets. Still haven't found your favourite pearl necklace? Browse all necklaces from Bonnie Studios.
